The Man's So Cool - 'Chicago' session 1997

Post by andrew fischer »

Hi all,

Both Thinking of You and Square Peg EW152CD singles have the following note regarding The Man's So Cool song:

"Track 3(4) recorded live during the "Chicago" Session, Dresden '97."

Does anybody know what is this note about? I never heard of such session.

Thanks all,

best regards
Andrey

Hi Andrew
I pulled out my CD and indeed it does say "Chicago" sessions Dresden 97.
Unfortunately I also have no idea what they are referring to.
Sorry

Hi Jim,

thank you for the answer, I have been trying to guess but still no luck...
Could it have something to do with Chicago musical?.. Or is it a session by several bluesmen dedicated to Chicago blues, which this song purely is?..

By the way, are the lyrics for this song put inside the booklet of your CD single?
It seems they are not printed anywhere...

Well they talk in the midnight
Still talk in the dawn
They talk through the moonlight
Til' it turns ... ... ...
(did not get this line, can anybody help?)

The man's so cool
Everybody's wondering why
The man's so cool
He's gonna make you lay down and cry

Well they never get near it
No matter how they try
See them sitting by the gutter
See him smile as he goes by

The man's so cool
Everybody wonder why
The man's so cool
Gonna make you lay down and cry
Cry cry

Well he rises without them
He learns while asleep
He lives in the sunlight
While they bind in the deep

The man's so cool
Everybody wonder why
The man's so cool
He wanna make you lay down and die

Deep down in dark water
They thrash and they crawl
They search for the secret
But there ain't no secret at all

The man's so cool
Everybody wonder why
The man's so cool
Gonna make you lay down and die

best regards

No lyrics in my CD !
thanks for those !
I've been very fortunate finding many of these rare EP's etc. on e-bay so I've ended up w/almost everything in C.R.'s hard to obtain library.
By the way I hope you have as much fun w/the Olympics as we had in Vcr. 4 years ago !
Before the games started and the early days were a little rough but in the end -WHAT A PARTY !

Hi Jim,

thanks for the answer, could you please checkt the last line in the 1st verse please, I did not comprehend it being not a native speaker...

I think I've collected almost all the non-album recordings by CR and all the original Japanese releases except for compilations, but I really miss the sound quality on the early vinyl singles, hope somebody manages to put them altogether in high definition sound and without noise someday...

What about Olimpics, we here in St.Pete in fact do not get this Olympics thing as all the mess is far down South (Sochi is over 2 000 km from St.Petersburg). I cannot say I am not bothered at all, but most of it is beyond me and there would be the ordinnary working days for us in February. If I was a bit younger and not bound to the working place, I would rather come as volunteers to Sochi, but as I am know, only the online news and TV is all that left for me regarding the Olympics.

By the way, did you suceed in downloading the Brighton gig?

Take care,
Andrey

Hi all,

I think I have found at least a part of the answer.

In the article with interview in The Independent from the 3rd of May 1997, you can read this:
http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style ... 59348.html
"With characteristic Stakhanovite energy, Rea has a whole new album of jazz-blues tracks, entitled The Blue Cafe, out in October. And on Cup Final day, as the Middlesbrough crowd sing along to "Let's Dance", he is flying to Dresden, to give his first concert in five years."

I assume The Man's So Cool was recorded that time, on this Dresden performance, being a one-off non-album song, like This Kind of Love from Glasgow 1994. I thought the 1st CR gig after he fell ill in spring 1994 was Donauinselfest in Vienna on the 21st of June, 1997, but I cannot judge if it was a fulltime gig in Dresden or just this mentioned Chicago session (on TV/radio?) or both of them... but this track on Square Peg single with a sticker "incl. previously unreleased live track" was apparently recorded in mid May during the 1st CR live session after illness.

Moreover, you can see from the article that Blue Cafe was to be released 3 months earlier than it was in fact and to become a jazz-blues album! Overproduction an compromise again?.. I recall Chris first mentioning plans to steer away from commercially successful albums and make a jazz-blues record back in 1988, just before Magnet was eaten by WEA... And I have counted only about 10 CR tracks released before 2001 which seem to be close enough to what can be called a blues... So strange...

Best regards

Hi Andrey
I reached out to some other C.R fans and these are the lyrics for this mans so cool.
Jim

Well they talk about him at midnight
still talking at dawn
they talk through the moonlight
till their tungs' are ripped and torn

The man's so cool
Everybody wonder why
The man's so cool
Gonna make you wanna lay down and die

Well they never get near it
no matter how they try
See him sitting by the gutter
see him smile when they go by

The man's so cool
Everybody wonder why
The man's so cool
Gonna make you wanna lay down and cry

Well he rises without them
He learns while they sleep
He lives in the sunlight
while they're blind in the deep

The man's so cool
Everybody wonder why
The man's so cool
Gonna make you wanna lay down and cry

Deep down in dark water
they thrash and they crawl
They search for the secret
but there ain't no secret at all

The man's so cool
Everybody wonder why
The man's so cool
Gonna make you wanna lay down and die
