josephine la version francaise (long version)

Post by jeffrey »

Hi,
where can I get the version francaise of "josephine" (5'35)
Is there somebody who have a MP3 copy for me ?
Is this the same version as the 12" remix version released in 1985 ?

Bye,

Jeffrey

Hi Jeffrey,
As far as I know, the French extended version of "Josephine" (La version Francaise) was produced in Montreux, in February 1987, by Chris Rea and Stuart Eales.
It was published by Magnet Records (distributed in Germany by RCA/Ariola, in 1987) :
- on 12" "Let's Dance" (four tracks: "Lets' Dance", "Let's Dance" ((12" special remix)), "Josephine" ((extended French re-record)), "Don't Care Anymore") CDMAG 299 (5-014918-029928),
as well as:
- on 3 inch CD single (WEA) together with "The Road to Hell" (part 1 & 2) and "He Should Know Better" YZ431CD - 246 620-2 (France WE 731), manufactured in Germany, in 1989.
- and on the Japanese six track CD titled "Snow" (cut #2), T4988 002 13952 1, licensed by Magnet Records Ltd., manufactured in Japan by Victor Musical Industries Inc., Tokyo, in 1987.
That's the only "French version" of "Josephine" I know of, but I'm sure there were copies produced in England or elsewhere.
Take care,
Chris

It's more readily available than you think, the so called 'french re-record' was put on the CD version of the shamrock diaries album replacing the original album version of the LP...

Yes that's true, but it's the short version.
I'm looking for the extended version.
I know it's also on a compilation from Mastercuts "classic balearic".
But very hard to find.

I have 4 studio versions of this song on cd & all different:

1.shamrock diaries 3.57
2.snow 5.39
3.new light 4.34
4.very best of 2001 3.36

First question, is the original Shamrock LP version on CD? Secondly when was the 2001 version recorded, the liner notes say produced by Jon Kelly, but it sounds very different from the New Lights version. Hope someone has the answers!

That version from Best of 2001 can also be heard un the clip for this song. Chris there looks like he's in 1985-86. The guitar sound is also tuned close to the way it was on Shamrock Diaries in 1985. But it was never released as a single, how I know it. More exact date of this record is not available for me to know, though I'd certainly like to...

This is the original 1985 single version (remastered?), note that it is different from the LP version...

If I do understand it right, LP Shamrocks diaries includes accoustic version of Josephine (4.26, only acoustic guitar, acoustic bass and grand piano, it's close to the way Chris played it live last tour on banjo with Paul Hirsh on keys), the same time as CD includes shorter and faster version (3.55), that's used in the french extended remix.

Hope that really helps someway,

This one is still my favorite version of that song, (although the video is not that great.)

But the latest one goes along with Chris' life and Josephine finally "grew up"...still a beautiful song after all these years.
