I won't hold my breath....Warner commissioned Rhino records to do a major project on Rod Stewart's catalogue back in late 2007 ( a few years too late) and only about half came out and what did was so poorly promoted that it bombed...thus scuppering the rest of the planned releases. Incidentally, one release that did make it was an album that recorded in 1992 that was shelved until the 2009 release...it was the first album that contained his cover of Windy Town.
There were compilations of unreleased material, collections of b sides and remixes and three deluxe editions of big selling albums plus some live stuff...all ready to go but sitting in the vault still....

The music industry is not a fast acting or logical beast.

Any news Bart on the Tapes? If they will be brought into a special CD? Or nothing new? Just wondering what is happening!
Thanks.

Thanks a lot rs4951 for this insight information on Rod Stewart, it is amazing but discouraging. Anyway, with Chris it is even worse - nothing done, as compared to at least something done on Rod's old stuff, but Stewart is objectively more widely know and better selling artist than Chris. I only hope that Warner look at Phil Collins successful reissues project, not Rod Stewart's flop done by them.

For Anneke's question, I do not think we may expect any news on an actual release of any old material, since it definitely takes too long to negotiate and the talks definitely have just started. I hope the things come quicker than I reasonably expect them to happen, who knows...

best wishes

There are three versions of Rod singing Windy Town...the mix released on A spanner in the works in 1995, a different mix that appeared on the belated released Once in a blue moon in 2010 and a Rod and piano only slow version on the Sessions box set from 2009...
Great mandolin intro on the faster version, it actually opened the album.

Thanks a lot once again for your insight knowledge on Rod Stewart, I only knew of 2 versions, the album mix and the piano one. Shall check the alternate mix shortly.

Actually, a compilation of pro-covers on Chris Rea songs is another project I have been thinking of. Remember successful Two Rooms 1992 project on Sir Elton's songs by other artists. For Chris there are not so many and so bright covers, but a dozen of them could make a nice album.

Here is the list of the pro-covers and Chris's songs sung by other artists I have in my archive:

I guess on the theme of other singers singing Chris's songs, you have a full album of Sarah randle 'The Sparrow' which chris has since put out some of his own versions.

1. The Sparrow
2. Working Day
3. Cry Baby Cry
4. Do What You Do
5. Picture Of You
6. That’s How Strong My Love Is
7. Come Around
8. Hurricane
9. The Falling Out Game
10. Since I Found You

The Cd is actually available very cheap on Amazon from 1.98 plus P&P but rises steeply after from other sellers.

She does have a website http://sarahrandle.co.uk/

Chris has written 8 out of 10 songs on Sarah's album. The 2nd track, Get On with the Working Day, its name can be seen on the studio chalkboard in Stony Road video. Chris simply gifted the song to Sarah instead of including it on Dancing Down the Stony Road album with his own vocals (or was it an instrumental?) Overall, the whole album The Sparrow sounds quite like an album by Chris but with Sarah's vocals since Chris wrote all but 2 songs on the album and it is himself and his band accompanying Sarah. So strange that it is such a little known fact...

Best regards

Once Warner / Rhino got the go ahead to do Rod's catalogue ( I do not know how long that took):
They approached producer Andy Zax in Autumn 2007. He spent months gathering tapes from storage ( 5000 tapes), then a few months working through them...it was Nov 2008 before a new Best of came out with one vault song, March and June 2009 for 3 deluxe albums, Sept 2009 for a four cd set of vault material, Jan 2010 for the Lost album...then it all stopped until 2014 when a live set came out...and nothing since then despite the rest being ready...
...this is a slow process and the rate at which cd sales are falling makes it less and less viable to release. The live set came out in a fairly cheap package, four years after it was planned to appear in a lavish boxset..

At this stage, I would gladly take download only releases...with respect to Chris, you would think that Rod Stewart could shift more units -but not enough to make Rhino release what they have.. :(

Hi all,

to be honest I think neither Chris nor the record company / companies show too much interest in the early works.
So even if the tapes can be restored - there must be dozens of tapes (e.g. live recordings) in the vaults somewhere and noone has been keen on releasing that stuff until now. Why should it be different this time now - particularly with songs from a rather unsuccessful era?

Apart from this: how many fans would buy this album of which 99% have never heard of before? 500? 1000?

If it gets a release I think download only will be the only economical way - which is certainly better than no release.
Of course, my dream is a lavish box set with the original artwork etc. but this is not going to happen.

I am far more in hope that it will, and be successful too. Remember when the Blue Guitars 11 CD set came out Chris explained execs told him he wouldn't get his costs back but he proved them wrong and it sold well and made money. So this can or could be the same. We underestimate how loyal a following he has and most commit to buying when something is released.
In addition most muscians make music for it to be heard and enjoyed, not tucked away for it to remain silent. Chris has said many times he didn't enter this career to be a rock star but a musician, he is aware of the financial side but is not driven by commercialism.
So for these reasons alone I am optimistic. I do wonder if Blue Guitars contained versions of the unreleased songs somewhere within, that was a bumper release and one I am so greateful for from him. I know of no other artist to release such a large collection as a single release. Commercially a record company would have wanted that to be released over about 9/10 years !
could this be true, could this be me..
